Hear ye, hear ye! Delivery from the mattress king! That was the famous cry which signalled to every excited child, bored housewife and arthritic senior citizen of New York City that their brand new bed or mattress had finally arrived.
The mattress king was a legendary, bargain basement retailer specialising in unique themed beds including castles, space ships and their iconic red race car. Operating across 7 tri-state area locations their flagship store was based in downtown Manhattan, boasting the biggest showroom on the eastern seaboard, complete with the mattress king’s very own golden throne!
Renowned for their low prices and wacky TV advertising, which would often feature the company’s founder Gary Litman as the king, the store experienced huge success for the best part of 2 decades. However, shortly after the global economic crisis in 2007, a combination of reduced turnover and a costly divorce battle with former wife Janice Hosenstein, resulted in Litman filing for bankruptcy and liquidating the company.
Today the once proud Manhattan store lies derelict and devoid of life, however, the spirit of the king still lives on among the many well-rested New Yorkers who he proudly served throughout the years.
